The Grateful Mentor

When something (such as mentoring) is given, with generosity, we sometimes expect that in return the recipient should be grateful. This state of mind comes from the ego. I am offering a gift and it is my right to expect something in return. It is as if we assume that our gift is of value to the recipient. But we don’t really know that.


Instead the mentor needs to practice gratitude for being offered the opportunity to listen to someone else, without criticism, or judgement, or even feeling the need to fix. It is rare we get these opportunities to learn, for when we listen, that is when we learn.

You cannot argue with the truth! The problem is that this has been the truth for all of the 30 years I have been involved in this sector, and it is still not happening.
